E and A Batchelder boot and shoe makers of North Brookfield slash payrolls by ten percent across the plant and Boston office. The move reduces staff to about 900 and extends the workday from eight to ten hours. United States Marines and Cuban allies struck the Spanish camp near Guantanamo Bay in daytime fighting. They routed about four hundred Spaniards, destroyed their water well, and forced the camp’s collapse. Casualties included one American slight wound and mixed Cuban fatalities and injuries. Spanish losses were believed to include forty dead with fifteen bodies recovered.
A Journal despatch from Camp McCalla Guantanamo Harbor describes marine scouting parties returning with eighteen Spanish prisoners including an officer. They seized one hundred mauser rifles ten thousand rounds and claim one hundred Spaniards killed two hundred wounded and the destruction of a blockhouse and telegraph station.
English correspondent Mr Whig am reports from Havana that coal is scarce but shore batteries are reinforced with two hundred guns including six 12 inch cannons. Inland defenses have been built in two months. Capturing Havana is believed to require 75 000 American troops. garrison remains about 50 000.
