Flag Day observances swept Greater Boston with services and tributes from ministers, governors, and mayors. The Boston Elks on the Common drew over 4000, Somerville saw 10000 attend where Governor Walsh spoke, as veterans groups led ceremonies and flags adorned homes.
Four thousand attendees including men women and children gathered on the Common at five oclock for Boston Elks services featuring song and oratory in a civic gathering.
In the American league Boston defeated St Louis 10 to 1 and Philadelphia topped Chicago 3 to 1 while Cleveland beat Washington 4 to 0 and Detroit won 3 to 0 over New York. In the Federal league Chiccazo shut out Baltimore 4 to 0 in the first game and Baltimore won 2 to 0 in the second, Buffalo routed St Louis 9 to 2 and Indianapolis beat Pittsburg 11 to 4.
Prohibition party leaders in Massachusetts plan their largest campaign yet fueled by the prohibition wave. They aim to field a candidate for every State office and will choose their gubernatorial nominee at the Worcester convention on June 30.
Charles Soloman, 27, of 7 Middlesex Street South End, was invited to a Stamford Street house to play cards. He was lured into a dark room and stabbed four times and robbed of a $300 diamond scarf pin and $100. Police seek a man linked to the assault.
United States post office clerks in Greater Eastor voted to join the American Federation of Labor yesterday. At Intercolonial Hall a new Local 100 was formed to supersede the old clerks’ union and will operate as a branch of the National Federation of Post Office Clerks.
Rumors say letter carriers planned to join the American Federation of Labor years ago but faced opposition in Washington. Now clerks reorganize and move to affiliate with the Boston Central Labor Union. Frank S. McCarthy guest at meeting. Officers elected include James H. Waters and John A. Kelley. Delegates named to finalize affiliation: Feeney Daly Cady O Neill Murray Cassidy O Dwyer Waters Kelley.
Washington June 14 Secretary Daniels announced that Rear Admiral Frank F Fletcher will be recommended for commander in chief of the Atlantic fleet to succeed Rear Admiral Badger when his tour ends in a few weeks for his work in Mexican waters.
Harry Vincent Niles 21 of 130 Elm Street Cambridge drowned in the Sudbury River near Hudson yesterday morning while fishing with friend Frank Scully of 24 Amory Street Cambridge. The two hired a Hudson rowboat and left home after 7 30.
Scully and Niles were angling downstream in a deep cove when a line snag caused the boat to overturn. Scully clung to the hull while Niles struggled and disappeared beneath the water. A passing canoeing party rescued Scully and ferried him to Hudson.
In a dawn pursuit through Back Bay, police hemmed by gunfire from a Metropolitan launch and a patrol wagon, two of three suspected burglars targeting Boston millionaires were nabbed near the Charles Gate area yesterday morning.
Police report three men, Joseph Rolla and Frank Inchey among them, identified by false addresses as suspects in recent Back Bay burglaries. A riverfront chase followed a break in at Thomas W. Lawson's 3 Charlesgate East mansion, with shots fired at officers.
Boston and Maine plans the biggest workforce reduction in its history with an 85 percent retention target. Stations clerical and yard forces face heavy layoffs as autos reduce summer travel demand, prompting a revised schedule and removal of up to 4000 miles of train operation daily.
Theodore Roosevelt III born today at the home of Theodore Roosevelt Jr and his wife in New York City. Theodore Jr, eldest son of the former president, married Eleanor B. Alexander on June 20, 1910. Their first child, a daughter, arrived August 17, 1911. Mrs. Richard Derby, formerly Ethel Roosevelt, also has a son.
The Roosevelt lineage follows the tradition of naming the first born male Theodore. Theodore Roosevelt Jr. grew to head the family after his father’s death, and his son carried the name Theodore, with the grandson set to receive it as well.
Explosion at St George’s Church Hanover Square in London causes smoke and damage. Authorities suspect suffragette involvement following a prior Westminster Abbey attack. Caretaker had secured the church after evening service. a passerby alerted the fire brigade.
