French forces push to halt a German offensive along the Oise and Matz sectors. Left flank and center gains yield about 400 German prisoners and many weapons captured while a German breakthrough is checked on the French right.
American artillery enters battle northeast of Montdidier as heavy fighting resumes in the Aisne sector. Reports say the New England division is stationed northwest of Montdidier with Cantigny cited as a recent American victory nearby. French forces on the Oise east bank retreat from Carlepont wood as German pressure increases southward.
A public appeal urges Americans to cut beef consumption drastically and set personal dietary limits. Officials emphasize conserving meat supplies and adjusting family meals to reduce demand amid supply concerns.
The Food Administration asked Americans to limit beef purchases to one and a quarter pounds of clear beef per person weekly or one and a half pounds with bone through September 15 to aid Allied and civilian needs in France Great Britain and Italy. Hotels and restaurants should restrict boiled beef to two meals weekly beefsteak to one roast beef to one meal weekly.
Arthur J. Balfour said in the House of Commons that there is no truth to reports that America and the allies had signed an understanding not to intervene in Russian affairs. He dismissed the claim as unfounded.

John C Meehan aged 40 of West Somerville was killed in a two car crash on Massachusetts Avenue near Amherst Street Cambridge shortly after midnight. Patrick McCarron of the same address and John Hooley of Cambridge were injured. Frederick W Van Stone 35 of Boston driver of one car is under arrest charged with manslaughter.

Sir Joseph Jonas former lord mayor of Sheffield and a steel manufacturer appeared at Bow Street police court on a charge of obtaining and communicating information prejudicial to the state and useful to the enemy. The names of co defendants were not known and details included information about prohibited places and things.
Two Norwegian steamships the Vindeggen and Henrik Lund were sunk by a German submarine about 200 miles east of Cape Charles Virginia on Saturday and Monday. Crews are adrift after losing their cargo as the U boat campaign in these waters reaches eighteen total sunk vessels.
A Danish steam ship rescued 68 crew members set adrift at sea. Eighty tons of copper ingots from the Vindeggen were loaded aboard an U boat before the steamer was sunk by bombs. The vessel was stopped on June 8 and the crew unloaded the copper into the small boats.
Henry B. Endicott Massachusetts food administrator imposes a two pound per person limit on sugar with a three pound monthly cap per buyer across all retailers. A 25 pound canning exemption applies, and violators face loss of supply. buying at multiple stores won’t bypass the rule.

Governor McCall issues a proclamation under the anti loafing act ordering all men ages 18 to 50 to work. The measure imposes a heavy fine or imprisonment for noncompliance and applies to both vagrants and coupon cutters. The policy requires at least 36 hours of work weekly.
Washington reports a modification of the recent freight rate increase order announced by UN Director General McAdoo. The plan canceling intra state rates in conflict with interstate rates is rescinded. The $15 minimum per car does not apply to local switching or heavy articles. The 15 cent per hundred pounds cotton increase now applies to any quantity.
