Death of Berlin-born king who ruled 1851 1866

John A. MacGahan notes the death of the Berlin born monarch born May 27 1819 son of King Ernest Augustus whose mother was a sister of Queen Louisa of Prussia. He married Princess Mary of Saxe Altenburg in 1843 and ascended the throne in 1851. His unpopular and ultraconservative reign led to ministerial upheavals and a pro Austrian stance during the 1866 war, resulting in Prussia annexing his territory and his exile to Vienna. He later agreed to indemnity terms but Prussia suspended payment pending better conduct.
