Year of Consolation Verse From Mrs Butler

A personal meditation on love sown in the heart watered by tears and sleepless care. The hoped for fruit fails to appear yet the speaker refuses to remove the seed, fearing it would end life itself. The poem invokes consolation themes from Mrs Butler.

Boston and New York Rivalry Echoes in 1847 Letters

The letter column reports a Philadelphia style skirmish between Boston and New York over steamers opera and city pride. It notes a possible Polk visit to Boston around June 25, later questioned, and mocks Washington gossips about Taylor Scott and Marcy. It closes with a signature from Joan Smith Jr of Arkansas.
