Hawaiis Friends Win in House On Annexation Debate

In Washington on June 16 the House agreed to consider and vote on the Newlands resolution to annex Hawaii. Debate will run from tomorrow until next Wednesday afternoon when a vote will occur. Annexationists pressed for swift action while the opposition sought a longer debate. The vote on related measures included a bill allowing volunteer soldiers to vote in congressional elections. High Democrats backed annexationists in pushing for quick consideration.

Death of William Taylor Hall A Revere Pioneer

William Taylor Hall, a prominent Revere citizen born in Chelsea in 1822, died at his Mill Street home after nearly a year of illness from an accident last July. A longtime public servant, he served 30 years as town clerk, 20 years as treasurer, and sat in the 1867 Massachusetts House. He helped conduct the first Republican meeting in North Chelsea and acted as enumerator for state census work in 1850, 1865, and 1875.

Born January 3, 1839 in Newburyport, he served thirty years as local ticket agent for the Boston and Maine in Lynn and was active in city government and the water board.
