A series of fires reported in Boston and surrounding towns causing substantial property damage. In Boston Highlands at 5 50 PM Saturday, Michael Kelly's stable rear and Frank Veneur's dwelling suffered about 200 and 500 dollars in damage, respectively, after a barn fire started by Thomas Kelly. A fall from a roof injured Frank Appleby of hose 7. Nearby No 619 East Second Street, South Boston, owned by Ann O Neill and occupied by Jeremiah Mehegan, lost about 500 dollars to fire and water. Additional incidents include a kerosene stove fire in Henry Dupee s house with under 50 dollar damage, a kerosene lamp explosion at No 6 Bennett Street with about 20 dollars damage, and a gas jet fire at No 27 Sharon Street causing negligible damage. Other briefs report fires in Pawtucket, Providence, Kent, Chicago, Portland, Trenton, and Marysville with losses ranging from hundreds to thousands and numerous workers displaced.
A deliberate fire at No. 48 Temple Street, a lodging house run by Mrs. Nieburg, was discovered at 1 30 am. A candle or lamp caused fires in two rooms on the second floor and a rear room on the first floor. Loss estimated at 100 dollars. Captain Abbott of the insurance brigade investigated with police and District Engineer Cheswell.

The remains of poet John Howard Payne, after 30 years of exile, were buried in Oak Hill cemetery in Washington with a ceremony attended by notable figures including President, General Sherman, and ex-Secretaries. A white marble monument, inscribed with “AT THE STATE HOUSE,” and a 14 foot shaft were unveiled amid a 5,000-strong crowd. The procession formed at the Corcoran Art Gallery, led by the Marine Band, and followed by military units.
The 1792 born author of Home Sweet Home died 1852 with inscription on his Tunis tombstone. A solemn service featured Leigh Robinson praising Payne’s genius, Bishop Pinckney reading final rites, and Payne laid in the vault beneath his monument amid light rain and silent mourners.
