An Indianapolis News dispatch from Chefoo dated June 9 reports a long anticipated Japanese assault on Port Arthur began early morning. Russian forces around the besieged city were reinforced by troops from Danny and Kinchow, with harbor ships firing heavy guns to aid land defenses.
Newsdealers report a flood of extras for Next Sunday's Post as families order the Johnnie Bear mask. The rush from Gloucester Augusta North Easton Lawrence Revere and other towns tests supply with many extras. parents urged to order now to please children next Sunday.
The will of Elisha S Converse, filed in East Cambridge, distributes about 10 million dollars to charity and family. Highlights include 150000 to Malden Public Library, 15000 to First Baptist Church, 350000 to each child, 80000 to Frederick T Ryder, 10000 to Elisha E Converse grandson, and 3000 to servants. General Europatkin reports to the Emperor that a Japanese brigade attacked a Russian detachment at Salmatze on June 7. The Russians withdrew toward Fenchulin pass as they suffered four losses including two officers wounded and 100 soldiers killed or wounded.
Report from General Kuropatkin dated June 8 describes a Japanese squadron of six vessels, reinforced by 11 more, shelling east of Kaichau and Senverchon on Liaotung peninsula for six hours. Philander C Knox of Pittsburgh Attorney General of the United States was selected to fill the late Senator Matthew Stanley Quay’s seat. He accepted and will serve by appointment of Governor Pennypacker until March 4 when the late senator's commission expires.

Both House and Senate rejected Governor Bates Sunday law bill and passed a version insisting local authorities issue licenses. The edited measure allows town or city licensing for theatrical and public entertainments on Sundays, with limited exceptions and a final signing by the Governor. The conference committee kept licensing provisions, outlining mayoral and selectmen authority with conditions on Sunday events and sacred music or open-air concerts on Sundays.
Governor Bates faced a stunned crowd as the soldiers bounty bill offering 125 to Civil War veterans who did not receive one was rejected by both House and Senate. Councillor Jewett announced the result to Bates amid wild cheers that echoed through the executive chamber and into the corridors.
The House voted 151 to 47 to oppose the governor's veto on the veterans bounty bill and cheered as the measure passed. In the Senate the veto was not sustained by a 25 to 8 vote after a crowded chamber and lively debate led by Representative George A. Schofield.
