Washington report says Tuesday and Wednesday will bring showers and cooler nights across Eastern New York with fresh south to southwest winds. New England will see fair weather Tuesday and Wednesday followed by showers and cooler conditions with refreshed southwest winds.
The weather bureau records a June 8 with temperatures near 90 to 91 degrees in Boston, the hottest for the day since 1900, with heat prostrations rising. Crowds flock to beaches and embankments as residents wear light clothing and prepare for more heat.
In New York on June 8 Oliver H. P. Belmont's condition improved after a tense day. Physicians reported the immediate crisis passed in the late afternoon and the slight progress continued into the night, giving cautious encouragement.
In West Newton an Italian girl woke to find a man sitting on her bed. She screamed and the intruder fled through the window. Police later arrested a man named Mannarino in connection with the incident.
The New Cliff Hotel on Cliff Avenue Newport burned in the early hours with only the manager John E. Jordan his wife and son escaping by leaping from the second story. Sparks spread toward Easton’s Beach pavilion as firefighters fought to save nearby buildings and cottages. The hotel owned by the Shipley estate of Philadelphia was a total loss along with several adjacent structures.
The Senate passed a 56 hour workweek for textile mills by 36 to 1 with only Senator Gideon B Abbott opposing. The measure, effective in two years, drew limited labor support and faced amendments from Turner Mitchell and Linehan that failed. Acting Governor Draper had urged passage but was met with a curt refusal.
The Boston Nationals failed to score against Chicago and lost 5 to 2 as they continue a winless skid. Meanwhile Taylor's squad reaches Cleveland just as New York thumps La Joie’s Braves 6 to 1. Five Boston athletes are named to the American Olympic team.
In Lawrence June 8 a Syrian merchant named John Haykel lies near death at the General Hospital as investigators seek the poison behind his illness and the sudden sickness of his two sons aged 16 and 10. The case has drawn broad attention from local residents and authorities.
Mrs Mary Abdelnour Haykel faces court on charges of poisoning her husband John Haykel and his two sons after illness in April. Doctors remain baffled by the cause with arsenic ruled unlikely and theories pointing to a rare Syrian herb. John Haykel lies in hospital as his son worsens while Haykel's first wife died in Danvers hospital. Haykel's daughter-in-law remains free on bond and residents describe her as educated and newly arrived.
The Boston Aldermen yesterday rejected Mayor Hibbard's appointment of John Ritchie Jr to the Board of Health. They approved a $500000 street loan as the Mayor wished and declined to cut trustees from seven to three. The consolidation attempts for Public Grounds and Park Departments failed. The Mayor was confined to his home by a slight cold from Memorial Day.
The Board of Health rejected John Ritchie Jr 8 to 5 in a secret ballot amid GOP abstentions. Mayor faces embarrassment as Ritchie claims GOP politicking and a push to appoint a partisan member. Aldermen Anderson and Ballantyne joined Democrats against a public grounds and park department consolidation.
The First Presbyterian Church at Fifth Avenue and Eleventh Street refused a $100,000 endowment offer from Thomas F. Ryan. The rejection was reported tonight in New York.
The late Mellen Bray's will, approved in East Cambridge, places more than 1 million dollars of residue to trustees for discretionary use, with two sons serving as trustees and executors. In Chicago, Roosevelt influenced Taft's war on anti Taft factions, with Hitchcock empowered to manage proxies and votes to back Taft.
Trustees Mellen H. Bray William C. Bray and Joseph B. Warner filed bonds of 2 500 000 each to govern a will that sets aside about 500 000 and places more than 1 200 000 for relatives or public and private charity. The estate totals 1 753 000 with 353 000 real and 1 400 000 personal property. Widow Persis T Bray receives 25 000 in lieu of dower and daughter Persis D Edmands 25 000 with contingent division among children. sons Mellen N Bray and William C Bray get 50 000 each. The bulk goes to trustees as executors with 75 000 set aside for widow and two sons producing income while principal reverts later.
Governor Guild boarded the 8 o'clock train for Washington for a conference with President Roosevelt that may settle the vice presidency. He said he would lunch with the President and return to Nahant, with no plan yet to attend the Chicago convention.
Senator Lodge wires Boston Post from Chicago calling the circulating rumor pure invention utterly and ridiculously false. He states he never said such a thing and reiterates his support for Guild, along with the Massachusetts delegation.
Senator Lodge told a Post representative that Governor Guild’s name would be placed before the Republican convention as a candidate for vice president. He spoke outside the Republican national committee room in Chicago’s Coliseum Annex, flanked by party leaders who voiced their support for the Massachusetts favorite son.
Chicago sources say Curtis Guild Jr will head to the convention with delegations from New England and other states. Congressman W W Wilson, Chicago, an active Cannon manager, spoke tonight about Guilds candidacy while avoiding a firm pledge as an outright Guild supporter.
