London June 8 The Anchor line steamer City of Rome arriving Queenstown reports a close call at Fastnet Rock in dense fog. Forefoot damaged bow on rock and stem broken at the peak, water shipped forward. Prompt engine reversal averted a fatal disaster. Passengers praised Captain and crew amid foggy danger.
A large protest in London formed on the Thames embankment and marched to Hyde Park. Temperance and radical groups joined with bands and banners as about 45,000 people gathered to hear speeches opposing the licensing bill.
The Admiralty Court awards £7500 to the British steamer Aldersgate and £600 to the American steamer Ohio for towing the City of Paris after its machinery failed at sea in March. London June 8 Lord Ripon presented to Cardinal Manning a check for 3676 pounds and an illuminated address from the pro-Cathedral congregation for his silver jubilee. A large deputation accompanied him including Judges Matthew and Stonor William O'Brien the Duchess of Newcastle and many clergymen. The cardinal said he would devote the money to complete the cathedral and clear its debt.
President Carnot granted pardons to seventy-two workingmen imprisoned for offences tied to recent strikes in Paris. Twenty-four others, mostly foreigners, were denied clemency and remain sentenced to one month.
A letter from Major Wissman the imperial German commissioner to East Africa states that cruisers off the east Africa coast fail to stop the slave trade. He argues only full military Garrisons along the coast can suppress the trade, despite ongoing enforcement efforts.
The Alameda arrived six days from Honolulu and naval salutes marked a lively scene. Admiral Brown and staff and Minister Stevens were hosted by King Kalakaua. The Northern Pacific east bound passenger train was robbed by masked men near New Salem North Dakota. The express messenger took $600 in money from the safe and the robbers rifled several registered letters. A posse left Mandan for the scene as four masked men were seen during the heist with one mask briefly removed revealing a medium height man with light hair.
The Weather Washington reports forecast till 8 pm Monday for New England and eastern New York. Expect fair conditions and warmer Tuesday morning with variable winds and fair weather on Tuesday.
The House approved the silver bill by sixteen votes and sent it toward free coinage. Party lines blurred as several Democrats and Western Republicans split, hinting at a possible Senate action and eventual conference. London commentary warned of a future reaction to American silver policy.

Montreal reports a street shooting on St Catharine Street that left Eugene H. Cowles of Cleveland wounded in the neck and jaw. Hale of Cleveland shot him after a private family interview regarding Cowles's daughter Florence, age about ten. Cowles had recently left Cleveland after medical issues and a divorce dispute with Mrs Cowles, formerly Miss Hale.
Chauncey M. Depew announced he has entirely recovered from his illness in Chicago. He praised his reception and predicted the fair will boost Chicago more than half a century of growth. He noted talk of a stockyard sale to an English syndicate, but said yard management would stay the same.
In the Senate Mr Moody offered a tariff amendment referred to finance committee. It imposes a 30 percent ad valorem duty after July 1, 1891 on cassiterites black oxide of tin and on tin bars black and pig. The House bill keeps tin ore and tin in bars blocks pigs of grain and granulated ore on free list. The Senate passed 120 private pension bills and the armory shop project at Springfield Mass. not to exceed 211639, plus a bill for compulsory education of Indian children.
In Camden A R Danton stable broken into last Wednesday night. A horse saddle and bridle stolen. Joseph Getchell disappeared the same night. Postal cards with robbery notice and Getchell description reached Sheriff Irish of Rockland who arrested Getchell in Rockland last night. Getchell sold the horse in Detroit, rode to Bangor then came by steamer to Rockland. Sheriff Irish will travel to Detroit to recover the horse.

A Sunday morning yacht trip from Burnham's wharf in South Boston ended in tragedy as a strong gale capsized the soop yacht Alp ine near Moon Island. One survivor, Walter Quinlan, was rescued after clinging to the capsized craft, while seven others perished in the cold water. The capsized boat and oars were recovered, and the search to recover bodies continued.
