Salt District backs free salt in Mills bill debate
In Washington on June 8 the House debated the salt clause of the Mills bill. Michigan speakers Burrows and Brewer and New York members Belden and Sawyer opposed free salt, arguing it would shutter salt works in New York and harm Michigan and others via cheap English salt. In salt producing districts Tarsney, Fisher, and Whiting supported free salt, with Whiting claiming he ships 100 barrels daily to the Eastern seaboard and would face no British competition. Tarsney voiced support and even invited Reed if he ran for Congress to join a free salt platform.

Dingleys Resolution Adopted in Tariff Debate
Washington June 8 Mr Dingley from the merchant marine committee reported a resolution asking the Treasury to advise if any tolls favor Canadian routes via St Lawrence and Montreal and whether new laws are needed to permit higher tolls on ships bound to Canadian ports. The tariff discussion continued with salt duties provoking strong lines as lawmakers argued over domestic production, prices, and the impact on farmers and dairymen. The salt paragraph was debated and then dropped from further consideration as the committee rose ahead of a House recess.

Rumor Denied on Episcopal Secessions and Maturin’s Return
A rumor of Episcopal high church defections to Rome stirs Anglican circles. The New York Herald cited Rev B W Maturin of St Clement's Philadelphia as unsettled by Rivington's move, facing a six to twelve month retreat. Father Osborne counters, noting Maturin’s health, a Holy Land trip, and intent to resume Philadelphia duties when fit.
