A Shanghai despatch reports the Dowager Empress ordering General Nein Si Chong to guard the Pekin railroad with 23000 troops as Boxers clash killing hundreds. British marines and sailors prepare to force a passage from Tien Tsin to Pekin, with about 800 landed, while foreign guards flood legation areas and European residents flee toward the coast.
