Blind Students Shine At Perkins Institution Commencement
The Perkins Institution and Massachusetts School for the Blind held a Tremont Temple commencement with President Samuel Eliot and Governor Oliver Ames among the audience. Helen Keller, then a shy eight year old, read with Miss Annie Sullivan guiding her and captured the crowd as the audience saw a unique display of tactile learning and achievement. The event featured Bach on organ, a Griffis address, a lively band, and demonstrations in mental arithmetic and tactile reading by blind children, with fundraising appeals for the kindergarten endowment.
