Captain Edward Stapleton of schooner Laura Nelson vanished after leaving his home to board his vessel at Atlantic wharf. He bought goods, then rode a train to West Gloucester and never returned. Police search ongoing. believed to have possibly taken his life in the woods. He was 42, 5 feet 10 inches, light complexion, wore dark clothes.
Monson Academy, a two story wooden building in the village center, was destroyed by fire thought to be incendiary around 11 tonight. The loss is total and insurance remains undetermined. The academy, incorporated in 1806, had this building as an enlargement since 1865 with few changes.
