Witness recounts bribery plot over election certificates

The testimony details a staged bribery scheme involving Asher to influence the electoral process. The witness describes negotiating an unrealistically high price, seeking backers and funds, meetings with Walter Pugh and Joe Hernandez, and efforts to learn money sources while maintaining a cautious stance. He notes agreements about the price and the role of Hernandez, and discusses the timing around December 6 and 7.

Senate test vote cements resistance to Resumption repeal

Washington reports a June 6 forecast of a Senate test vote showing the Resumption act cannot be repealed and no broad financial measures pass this session. Windom sought the River and Harbor bill while Blaine pressed Army bill action. Hereford, Coke and Voorhees fought to veto both motions to force a Resumption repeal vote. Blaine prevailed 35 to 23 as radicals concede minority status. The House received the Post Route bill with a Brazilian subsidy. Eden blocks concurrence, leaving the measure stalled on the Speaker’s table.

Senate Rejects Retrenchment in Army Bill Fight

The Senate, voting 35 to 23, began work on the Army Appropriation bill after rejecting House retrenchment measures. Blaine led, with total House-origin funds $25,396,671 plus Senate additions to $26,189,585, funding army pay, a new Foot Hills post, and medical history costs. The chamber kept House army cuts, favoring a 25,000 enlisted cap and other committee amendments. REV. DR NATHANIEL BOUTON
