72000 Contraband Cigars Seized in Two Cities

Federal inspectors seized 72 000 cigars on Federal Hill Providence and 3000 in Natick for lacking revenue stamps. The stock, made in New York, bore the name of a Boston dealer and was discovered in the Italian section.

Man Confesses Murder of Detective in 1910

Lee Cage of Wheeling confesses in a U S District Court in Columbus Ohio that he killed Detective John J Reardon of Pittsburg at Steubenville Ohio in 1910 during labor unrest. The confession ends related civil actions over a 5000 dollar reward and damages. He admits firing the shots that killed Reardon and leaves court for Wheeling after the settlement.

Malden Teamster's Death Not Murder

The death of John McCarthy a Jackson and Newton teamster found severely injured in the Everett marsh near the New England Gas and Coke Company was ruled accidental after an autopsy by Medical Examiner Durell. The examination showed head injuries from an accident days earlier with subsequent complications.

Strike Settled at Cudahy Armour Plants in Sioux City

The 1500 striking workers at Cudahy and Armour & Co. packing plants in Sioux City won a 10 to 20 cent per hour raise. Other employees who joined in sympathy will resume work as operations restart immediately.

Youthful Gangsters Sentenced in Roxbury Court

In Roxbury Police Court yesterday morning four young men and a girl were sentenced on charges of breaking and entering and receiving stolen goods. Suspensions affected two other defendants. The stolen property, valued in the thousands, was identified in court with most of it recovered in the past week.

Information leading to the roundup came from 14 year old William R Garrett and a Roxbury girl Florence Mullen. The gang stole property from Mrs Mary Breen of 81 Bainbridge St and Milo Kebbe of 7 Vancouver St Roxbury. Members include Frank Wise 20 Cabot St sentenced to a year. John W O Connor 19 Sycamore St six months suspended. Catherine Alvarez 19 Riverside St Sherborne with appeal held. Edward Wise 20 Cabot St six months suspended. Edward F Alvarez 20 Sterling St six months. William R Garrett defaulted. Also implicated were Leslie Purington and Florence Paulding sent to Portsmouth for a year and six months respectively.

Four Drownings In Fraser River Scow Collapse

In the Fraser River near Grand Canyon Alberta a scow from Grand Trunk Pacific contractors split in two and four crewmen died. Four others reached shore after a desperate struggle. Plymouth June 5 Mrs. Alice B Weeks of Fairhaven obtained a decree nisi in her divorce suit against Andrew Weeks a retired Marion merchant The libel originally cited cruelty and a second allegation was added after a hearing Judge Henry A King granted the decree nisi on statutory grounds.

McMillan Leads Three Year Arctic Expedition to Crockerland

Donald B. McMillan former Peary aide will command an American Museum of Natural History party to Crockerland for a three year Arctic voyage. The crew includes Dr. Harrison Hunt Ensign Fitz Hugh Green Navy man Theodore Allen geologist W E Ekblow zoologist M C Tanquary and J C Small. They sail July 5 from South Paris Maine on a supply vessel and expect to return in 1916.

Senate Hears Delayed Plan to Reform Customs Service

Washington June 6 Acting on Secretary McAdoo recommendations the Senate commerce committee voted to report favorably a bill to defer until January 1 1914 the proposed reorganization of the customs service reducing districts and collectors from 156 to 49 affecting every port. McAdoo says the plan omits reforms he seeks and suggests a six month postponement with a requirement that the reform save $500000 based on current year expenses.

Railroad Indicted Twenty Times For Rebating

Twenty indictments charging rebating were returned by the grand jury in the United States District Court at Columbus against the Grand Trunk Western Railway Company. The cases allege illegal concessions on freight shipments between Adrian Michigan and Newark Ohio.
