Light batting and small scores in National League games
Saturday's slate featured light hitting and low scores across the league. Jim Ryan succeeded Everett as Chicago's leadoff man, Al Maul enjoyed a strong Baltimore return after two years away, and veteran help joined Weyhing-Phret-Esper-Kilroy. Cincinnati's Jake Beckley leads the club, while Hanlon tests Jennings at second and Demontreville settles at short. Western League notes record Detroit's first triple play with Connaughton, O'Hagan, and Viox involved. Newport's Pickett and Kelly troop heavy hitters as changes ripple through rosters including Shosta's release and Priest stepping to right. Pawtucket releases Knorr while Brockton's Magoon posts elite fielding and hitting marks. Germany George Smith heads to Omaha, Nyce leaves Detroit, and Graves wins salary judgment from Detroit. Breitenstein discards the drop ball. Princeton beats Georgetown and Yale, Lafayette challenges Penn. New York slips only three at home, Crooks posts about .166, and the Wagner brothers, Washington and Louisville, headline renewed baseball fever. Tim Hurst is described as Chris Van der Al's Irish angel.
