Whig Promises and Prices in 1840 Connecticut
In 1840 Whigs promised high prices for farmers goods and the interior dairy and livestock prices are cited as proof of broken pledges. Butter at 6 cents a pound veal 1 cent calves 75 cents eggs 8 cents a dozen sheep with fleece 75 cents to 1 dollar cows 10 to 15 dollars and other items proportionate show the alleged gap between pledge and reality. The piece argues laws of trade differ from political commitments and warns voters.
