A French steamer was attacked yesterday morning off the Maryland coast. A United States warship drove off the raider and pursues the enemy craft. Another schooner was sunk and submarines are moving south to escape the patrol. Forty two missing from Carolina and sixteen known drowned.
Today marks registration day for the latest increment to Uncle Sam's fighting force. About 40 000 to 50 000 youths across New England, including roughly 8 000 in Boston, file to enlist unconditionally, rallying behind liberty and duty as a nationwide turnout begins.
The radioleine, first transatlantic liner attacked by submarines, was saved at 9:30 by an American destroyer about 65 miles off the Maryland coast. The same vessel found the Edward R. Baird Jr. sinking after bombing, bringing total known sinkings to seven schooners and four steamers. patrol boats close in on raider as U boats active off the American coast. Secretary Daniels ordered the report released. destroyer still hunted the enemy with two survivors aboard.
Several Boston residents who sailed on the steamship Mohawk from Jacksonville Fla to New York are now in Charleston D C. The vessel was off the Virginia Capes when wireless warning of a submarine attack flashed and she immediately put into Charleston the nearest port.
American and French forces repelled repeated German assaults west of Chateau Thierry near the Marne, with units entering the battle and taking prisoners. American gunners impressed, as Germans suffered heavy losses and strategic momentum shifted to Allied defense along the Aisne and Ourcq corridors.
The German drive ends its current advance as General Foch commits reserves. Analysts expect a staged retreat to prepared lines near the Marne and from Soissons southward, with a renewed push at the Amiens sector if a ten mile gain proves decisive. Allied reserves observe and await the next testing of line weaknesses.

One man died instantly and three were seriously injured when a large auto overturned at Dead Man's Curve on Commonwealth Avenue Brighton. The crash occurred after the vehicle was forced into a ditch by an oncoming car toward Boston. Injured include John A. Mitchell of 108 Jackson Road Newton who was driving the vehicle and the Rev. Frank C.
Boston defeated Detroit by 7 to 6 while Philadelphia edged St. Louis 5 to 3 and Washington trailed Cleveland 3 to 1. Chicago beat New York 5 to 4 in another close contest.
