French Steamer Attacked Off Maryland Coast by Raider

A French steamer was attacked yesterday morning off the Maryland coast. A United States warship drove off the raider and pursues the enemy craft. Another schooner was sunk and submarines are moving south to escape the patrol. Forty two missing from Carolina and sixteen known drowned.

The radioleine, first transatlantic liner attacked by submarines, was saved at 9:30 by an American destroyer about 65 miles off the Maryland coast. The same vessel found the Edward R. Baird Jr. sinking after bombing, bringing total known sinkings to seven schooners and four steamers. patrol boats close in on raider as U boats active off the American coast. Mohawk Sails to Charleston After Submarine Warning

Several Boston residents who sailed on the steamship Mohawk from Jacksonville Fla to New York are now in Charleston D C. The vessel was off the Virginia Capes when wireless warning of a submarine attack flashed and she immediately put into Charleston the nearest port.
