Police Probe Into Purchase Street Fire Doors

Police will undertake a rigid investigation into why fire doors between 238 and 240 Purchase Street near South Station were not closed during a $200,000 wool fire that raged early yesterday. Initial reports suggested an awning origin, but firefighters later said the interior blaze spread rapidly due to flammable contents. Dozens of firemen inhaled smoke and others were knocked out temporarily as hot air explosions and smoke hampered efforts. The blaze threatened nearby buildings and marked a notably spectacular city fire over the past year.
