Potomac flood recedes. riverfront dries after record crest
Washington reports the Potomac fell from its peak amid widespread flood damage. Water withdrew from South Washington streets and the riverfront began to clear as fishermen gathered stranded carp and two inch fry escaped from Brog station. Officials feared damage to the Washington monument foundation though later deemed unlikely. The long bridge sustained heavy strain with spans breaking free near the draw, while repairs to Pennsylvania connections will start soon. Roads and crops suffered, bridges down, and through train service to the south and west interrupted.

Wreck of Canal Shuts Flooded Potomac Route to Trade
The flood over the Potomac halts the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, a project begun in 1826 and completed in 1850 at over 11 million dollars. Despite large investments, total expenditures approach 40 million. Coal traffic has dwindled due to competition from the Baltimore and Ohio railroad to about 100,000 tons per season. Senator Gorman warns the canal may be abandoned for the season as the company lacks funds for needed repairs.
