Bonds Gone Mathes Says Dover Bank Loss Exposed

In Dover New Hampshire June 2 a misconduct case centers on Treasurer Mathes and the Strafford Savings Bank. A former Dover water works superintendent Neil Kelley from Lawrence Massachusetts reported missing bonds worth about 2000 dollars held in a safety vault. Mathes admitted taking Kelleys bonds for his own use claiming he paid interest, with officials suggesting losses may have occurred in speculation. Mathes shows improvement in health and may soon be moved from bed to an invalid chair.

Three Fires Ravage Lewiston Box Factory Mill and Barn

A Payson Rich Company box and shock factory, a nearby grist mill, and a barn owned by Mrs H A Nevens were destroyed by a June blaze two miles from Lewiston Maine. Damages estimated at 20000 dollars. Wesley Cummings Arthur Provenchir and Thomas Laphe suffered burns while escaping. Sparks also endangered the house and barn but the house was saved.
