The Mattie Holmes was struck by the Ada Ames and sank at Freshwater Point with a difficult rescue of the crew. The Banish Stremsr Orion also wrecked in the same incident, a total loss for that vessel.

Collision in fog sinks schooner Mattie Holmes near Newport

In dense fog between Watch Hill and Point Judith the schooner Mattie Holmes commanded by Captain Charles C. Mattox sank within five minutes after a bow collision with the Rockland Maine schooner Ada Ames commanded by Captain Kk C Emery. The Ames rescued Mattox and his five crewmen. losses included personal goods. Holmes carried coal bound for Brewster Maine while the Ames carried 2800 barrels of lime for New York with damaged rigging bulwarks rails and jibboom left on deck.

Danish steamer Orion wrecked in fog near Cape Race

The Danish steamer Orion from New York bound for Copenhagen ran ashore at Freshwater Point seven miles west of Cape Race in dense fog at daybreak. With a crew of forty five and twenty rescued shipwrecked seamen aboard as passengers, all escaped with no serious injuries and were hauled up by local fishermen as the vessel settled, water filling to the second cargo.
