May 31. Richards Hands, night clerk at Crawford's drug store No 120 Hudson street, was murdered last night. His skull was crushed and throat cut from ear to ear. A blood smeared pestle was found near the body. Police have no clue. Hands lived with wife and two children opposite the store. Wife collapsed on hearing the news. Coroner began an inquest. comments on other incidents follow.
At Tammany Hall on May 31 the united French societies gathered to honor Victor Hugo. The hall featured a black draped catafalque with white W H initials, guarded by the Lafayette group, and candles creating a sombre glow. About two thousand attendees including Italians and families listened to French and English addresses and a funeral dirge.
A Maiden woman walking home from a visit in Medford was assaulted by a large man who leapt from bushes near Spring Street. She escaped to Pease's hotel and reported the attack. A search led to a suspect chased by a Medford officer who fired several shots but none captured the assailant.
Robert Hardy an American, 21, was killed at a dancing house in Mexico City at 5 AM by a Mexican man named Jealoney. The house of deputies adjourned until Sept 16 after passing various appropriation bills and appointing a 15 member committee to handle unfinished business and to notify the president and senate. The session is expected to be prolonged.
Saratoga N Y May 31 Detective E A Andrews arrested George Murphy a tramp at the Delaware and Hudson freight depot. Murphy drew a revolver during transfer to the lockup and shot Andrews twice wounding his hand and leg. Andrews fired back twice hitting Murphy through the bowels. Murphy’s wounds are internal and believed fatal. Murphy is from New Jersey.
In New Haven on May 31 the 11 division of the Salvation Army faced a mob in the public square. A colored sergeant known as Grinning George was knocked down and trampled. several women were roughhoused as the unit fought its way out of the scene.
Five thousand spectators attended the New York lodge of the Elks as graves at the Cemetery of the Evergreens were decorated with roses and flowers. Exalted Ruler Moreland led the ceremony with songs, prayers, and reflections on charity justice and brotherly love. Rev Henry Ward Beecher delivered an oration praising mutual aid and remembrance. The event closed with a chorus of Auld Lang Syne as the procession returned to Broadway Park.
Fire alarms report blazes in a Main street residence owned by A H Allen occupied by M Sedgwick and an Atlantic avenue four story brick building housing James A Butler Co with losses estimated under 500 dollars. A Sunday blaze at Bulfinch street damaged nothing. A New York fur store fire caused 3000 dollar damage with higher insured loss. In Worcester the Piedmont woollen mill burned, 10,000 dollars loss, with insured machinery and building.
In Airy Maryland on May 31 Mrs. John Knott was assaulted when Townshend Dock entered her home knocked her down and fled with her. A posse captured the suspect and Constable Dietrich held him overnight before turning him over to the sheriff. Citizens fear an attempt to lynch the suspect at jail.
The twenty eighth annual election of the ancient and honorable artillery company will be observed today in the customary manner by a parade church services banquet and the election and commissioning of officers for the ensuing year. The sermon will be delivered at the New Old South church by Prof William Lawrence of Harvard college. The election and commissioning will take place on the common after the banquet which will occur at Faneuil hall about noon.
In Lynchburg Virginia on May 30 a record tobacco glut swamps warehouses with 1,500,000 pounds on hand. Wagons clog the streets at night as unloads stall. Merchants urge growers to hold crops back to stabilize prices, noting no prior similar shortage. The market remains firm despite the surplus.
Patrolman Meade of the fourth division responded to a report of a man in need of surgical aid and found William Kelly, 42, at No 38 Cove Street with a badly fractured left hip awaiting medical attention.
