The first gun in the Maine campaign is fired in Bangor by the greenbackers though Solon Chase’s toy pistol is not counted as a gun. A large convention is expected with delegates far exceeding those at Chase’s. The Neal Dow convention is at Augusta on June 1 followed by Republican in Portland June 13 and Democratic in Lewiston June 27.
