Contested Stewarts in Ward Speech Sparks Trade Debate

In a June 30 1868 reply from E B Ward’s office the contention centers on multiple Stewarts cited in Capt Ward’s May Cleveland speech. The letters from A T Stewart & Co claim a Montreal Northwest trader, plus Stewart McDonald of the West, may be the targets. Ward’s reply notes no single individual named and suggests the reference may be to a class of Stewarts in both regions.
