George E. Hodgdon was unanimously nominated for mayor by the Democratic caucus in Portsmouth New Hampshire. He is a lawyer and Grand Army man serving as judge advocate on the G A staff in New Hampshire and also a representative in the legislature and an alderman of Portsmouth.
Reports from Gloucester to Brunswick detail a massive thunder storm with lightning causing fires in a horse stable, damage to ships Ernest J Norwood and others, telegraph and telephone outages, washed streets, and multiple farm losses. Dozens of towns report barns, houses, and crops struck with varying insured losses.
General Clinton B Fish of New Jersey declares Grover Cleveland unbeatable in the next campaign regardless of Republican nominees Blaine or Sherman. Sal Lake Utah July 29 John Taylor president of the Mormon Church was buried today At the funeral a son tried to address the audience claiming his father was deceived in the constitutional convention and opposed the anti polygamy resolution but the program manager refused interruption and the speaker left Carthage Ill July 29 it is said Joseph Smith Jr president of the Mormon church at Laona will go to Salt Lake to present his claim to the church presidency in Utah
The Boston Chess Club hosted a five game match against Major J. Moore Hanham, champion of the New York Chess Club. The first game ended with Hanham defeated after 31 moves, under a fifty move limit for mate.
In Tonopo Ohio on July 20 the Ohio Republican League met with Dan Ryan presiding and forty delegates. An executive committee was elected from each district. Lincoln’s birthday will be celebrated annually. Lyman King and Thomas were chosen as delegates to the national convention in New York. Blaine manager Judge King praised Blaine and implied support despite his defeat. The league resolved to back the state ticket nominated the previous day.
A fire at Christian Essen's Archer avenue bakery early today killed or gravely injured most occupants of the building. Two Essen children suffocated in their beds, and ten others including Essen and workers were fatally or severely burned or suffocated. Rescue workers found all residents overcome. several jumped or fell while attempting escapes. Authorities arrested Essen and another man on suspicion of arson.
A fire at midnight damaged a wooden building at 88 Prince Street, with estimated losses of $50. No injuries reported.
In Curiaco Illinois Daniel C Ryan's cooper shop burned this morning with a 40000 loss, 29000 insured.
