Immortal Self and Plato in Concord Philosophy Session
The Concord School of Philosophy heard Boston lecturer W R Alger argue for an immortal self from myth and speculation, tracing selfhood through Socrates, Plato, and Nirvana. Cornell professor Shackford then framed Plato versus the Sophists, praising Socratic method and criticizing sophistry. Julia Ward Howe’s lecture on Woman in Plato's Republic closes the session.
