City of Mexico July 28 American prisoners released after five days in separate cells. Authorities say Mor gan despatches to Washington unanswered and Freling huysen cables requested release. Mexican officials warn against international trouble. Friends of the president seek friendship and avoid offense. Article 19 of the constitution cited as due process violation.
The sinking fund commissioners approved 2,000,000 armory bonds to fund new armories for the National Guard in New York City. Bonds will be consolidated stock bearing 3 percent interest and run ten to twenty years. Also noted are donors for J H McGahan's remains, a Peter Cooper monument committee, and an assignment filed by Meyer Bros. for 32,091 in preferences.
In Bridgeport on July 28 a man was arrested in Danbury while attempting to kidnap Carrie Cooper, six, daughter of James W. Cooper. Neighbor Robert Lewis intervened, aiding others to capture him. He gave the name Thomas Kewy, later linked to a Bank book of Westside Savings Bank, New York. The man, about 50, boarded with a Mr. Kapp on White Street and claimed to be Dougherty from New York.
The Crescent City arrived at Aspinwall on July 18 in tow of three launches for the Panama canal company, loaded with bricks. Heavy rains hinder new earthwork but do not suspend tidal work. about 10,000 laborers are active while many hundreds are unemployed. The isthmus faces poor sanitary conditions with yellow fever claiming many victims.
In New York on July 28 a member of DeWolf & Swan disclosed that a customer, trustee of an estate, deposited 150000 of securities with the firm. The securities were loaned and proceeds paid to the customer before the fraud was uncovered, leaving the firm responsible to the estate for the securities and stating that losses will not exceed the disclosed amount.
In Philadelphia on July 28 the United States Circuit Court accepted Oliver Ames's request to resign as receiver of the Credit Mobilier of America. His counsel cited workload as the reason. Samuel R. Shipley was named the new president of Provident Life Insurance and Trust Company and successor to Ames.
In Pittsburg on July 23 the United States court dismissed Atlantic Giant Powder Company of California's bid for an injunction against Marquis Hulings Wilson Barr Howe and others to restrain patent infringement on a nitroglycerin explosive method. A favorable ruling would have granted a manufacturing monopoly.
The National Rifle Association sent governors of states and territories a circular requesting a prize for a Governors Match at Creedmoor during the fall meeting. Each prize will be named after the governor presenting it for competition.
New York July 28 crowds filled Irving Hall to watch Mike Cleary of New York and Jack Burke of England in a four round boxing bout. The match ended in a draw as both fighters were booed when removing gloves, with a prize purse of 1500 dollars shared.
July 28 Detroit report says the 14-year-old daughter of Stephen Kimball, a wealthy Lyons area farmer, was seized and assaulted by two tramps near her brother’s home. A $500 reward is offered for the arrest, and about a hundred men chase the alleged suspects.

Mobile July 28 Col J B Murphy prominent citizen and president of Mobile Life Insurance was shot and killed last night near his residence in the county. Reuben Tripp, who fired the fatal shot, surrendered to authorities after the confrontation stemming from a land dispute.
Lowell dispatch reports 20 year old Kennedy drowned while bathing in the Merrimack river at Centralville and his body recovered. Earlier, Willie Buckley, son of L. W. Buckley, drowned at North Billerica yesterday.
Urica New York July 28. Pomeroy Jones aged 149 native of Oneida county died ten days ago at Lairdsville his birthplace in 1779 He served in the war of 1812 He was a cold water man but an habitual smoker for many years.
Franklin Kentucky July 28 W S Cavett waived examination on the charge of incest. Mob violence is feared. Gov Knott refused to send militia to guard the jail.
Otis Strong of Louisville filed a $20,000 lawsuit today claiming injuries from a February wreck near Charleston Indiana on the Ohio and Mississippi railroad where he lost a leg.
In Columbus Mississippi on July 28, three inches of rainfall from 4 AM to noon caused the Tombigbee River to rise to 101 feet. The flood heightened concerns as waters surged through the area.
Reports from New York Albany and other cities detail the Democratic National Committee notifying Grover Cleveland and Thomas Hendricks of their nominations. Plans include visits to Albany Saratoga and public meetings, with Irish and German groups showing support for Cleveland while Blaine rivals face opposition.

Halstead surrendered at Hon David Brewster’s home claiming Gorman had threatened him. Both men had a reputation in town and the quarrel is said to involve women.
Sally Powers claims age 106 at Augusta almshouse while James Shanahan of New York faces dangerous pneumonia. Property shifts include Ralph Pomeroy buying 50 000 for Thomas Appleton’s Commonwealth avenue home. L J Rose sells Paspeena estate for 750 000 with 2000 acres, plus 1800 tons of grapes and 16 000 dollar orange crop last year. A Chicago convention of United States and Canada trades unions opens October 7 for a week. Burglaries in St Stephens yield 270 dollars plus jewelry. suspects held in St George. Passengers on the Saxon include Ex-Gov. St John’s Prohibition party bid.

Chicago despatch says ex Gov Moses of South Carolina is arrested on a Massachusetts governor’s requisition for embezzlement. Middlesex grand jury indicts him for obtaining 34 dollars from Col. Thomas Wentworth Hig Hus by false pretences. A Cambridge officer travels to Chicago to secure the prisoner.
The navy reports Commander Schley notes risks taken to reach open ice during the Greely relief search and that Thetis and Bear grounded two or three times with no serious injuries. He will provide a full account of each grounding later as the expedition’s rapid progress is cited. The total cost is now about $700,000, up from $500,000.
Prize winners from Boston were W.F. Elliot J. F. Keating and William Hamilton, all taking first second and third with codfish of 11 8 and 6 pounds. Today’s voyage heads to Provincetown and tomorrow travels along the south shore to the Cape Cod canal.

Ellora R. Hall, a 22 year old from Lawrence who had worked for James Keenan of Sandwich, stole a horse valued at about 300 dollars from Seth F. Swift’s barn in Sagamore Bourne on July 25. He fled to New Bedford where Deputy Sheriff James W. Harley recovered the property. Hall admitted guilt before Justice Whittemore and was held on $500 bond for the October Barnstable Superior Court term or jailed without sureties.
