Congress near adjournment as river bill threatens veto

Washington July 28 An adjournment of congress will come early next week unless river and harbor interests win concessions in a potential presidential veto. The navy bill should clear by Monday and the sundry civil bill will pass with little debate. Mississippi bill may fail if introduced and some representatives vow no further river and harbor legislation if the president vetoes. The president is said to have prepared a veto message.

Lightning strikes St. Michael's Church in Hudson

A severe thunder storm Friday morning struck St. Michael's Catholic Church in Hudson with a lightning bolt. The bolt entered the church, traversed the organ loft and auditorium, caused extensive damage but no fire. Estimated damage about 250 dollars.

Despatch from Rome describes Mr. Marsh's remains arriving in Rome and being escorted to the Protestant cemetery by a formal procession. Miners Reject Resume Terms Halt Work in Cumberland

In Cumberland the New Central company miners committee refused to resume on manifesto terms. The company ordered lumber sent to Lonaconing for barracks for foreign labor and a police squad to report to the lines early tomorrow as contractors begin work. In Portsville the Kehley Run colliery strike at Shenandoah ended as operators agreed to the miners demands.

Temperance Convention Grants Action At Lincoln

The Nebraska state temperance convention finished its sessions appointing an executive committee to oversee statewide campaign work and selecting five delegates for the national convention in Chicago. The body plans to decide on submitting a constitutional amendment and orders a thorough canvass to promote a prohibitory amendment with each party taking action.

Postoffice Building Contract and Local Updates

Postmaster Dalton has authorized Endicott Peabody to erect a building on the Morse estate site in Washington street for the Salem post office. The work will start immediately and should be ready for occupancy early in the fall. The pest house wings have been removed for relocation. A new almshouse chapel is finished and to be used Sunday with Chaplain Ceriton preaching. Next Wednesday the Daughters of Liberty of Bene will visit Salem by invitation of the Salem lodge. Mal pond clearing work is progressing rapidly.
