Harvard Crew Impresses On Thames Ahead Of August Race
London July 28 Harvard crew rowed twice on the Thames in their American boat creating a favorable impression though pace was slow. Oxford challenged for August 23 or the following day. Harvard will practice daily and a second Thames trip was planned as rain hindered assessment. Also notes Gladstone’s slight improvement, a Brooklyn bank defaulter arrested, sanitary measures, a possible wage strike by German tailors, anti rent troubles and canal updates.

Swede kills wife in New Haven saloon murder
In New Haven on July 28, Swede Peter Norquest shot his wife in a Congress Avenue saloon, wounding her with buckshot and threatening fatal injury to the left lung. He fled to a nearby German boarding house, where he was arrested. A pistol, loaded barrel, and caps were found, indicating premeditation. The couple had a troubled marriage and she had come to America last fall.
