John Jay Crittenden dies. long career as statesman ends

The last of a generation of American statesmen with faith in the Constitution has died. John Jay Crittenden of Kentucky passed away at his Frankfort home after a half century in public life. He served as Senate member, Attorney General, Governor, and five time U S Senator, aligned with the Whig tradition and resisting extremes. He opposed sedition laws and argued for compromises during sectional crisis, including the Crittenden proposition.
