Elm beetle invasion reaches Boston and beyond
The elm tree beetle has descended on Boston and many suburbs and has appeared in Housatonic and Connecticut valleys, along the Westfield River, and up the Merrimac, with insects reported in Worcester, Pittsfield, Westfield, Easthampton, Northampton, Lowell, Lawrence, Haverhill, Newburyport, Salem, Plymouth, Sandwich, Brockton, Yarmouth, and New Hampshire. Trees are denuded in parts of Boston, with leaves turning brown and holes showing on surfaces. Spraying with arsenate of lead is cited as the remedy, and early-season spraying helped elms avoid serious damage. The beetle lays 431 to 623 eggs per four weeks, leading to tree-feeding insects that hatch within a week. Experimental parasite control is being developed at Harvard College and the State laboratory. Commissioner Kirkland notes past gypsy moth work proving effective against the beetle.
