Senate Debates Tariff Bill and Race Remarks In July Session

In Washington July 27 the Senate approved a resolution to obtain all State Department correspondence on French restrictions from 1581. It also considers a Mitchell concurrent resolution promoting tariff free access for US goods in South and Central American ports, while excluding wool and hides. Moran led discussion on the tariff bill with remarks on protection, race, and labor. Colquitt attacked the bill as a tool of plunder, while Hoar defended Massachusetts agriculture aided by tariffs and railroad expansion. The tariff bill stalled to Monday with House amendments referred to a conference. Senate pension bills grant widows of Generals Cook Tremont and McVigan $2000 annually.
