The 600 Massachusetts militiamen who refused the six year federal oath are recalled to Framingham. They must serve under Uncle Sam until their enlistment ends in their militia units and may be sent anywhere the government directs unless discharged for dependent relatives.
Six hundred soldiers who balked at six more years of service faced a legal dilemma about leaving Framingham mobilization camp. Washington rules forced a choice between self repayment or state funding for their war expenses. Governor McCall and General Cole agreed mileage for return and state payment of costs, as War Department plans a new mobilization instruction for Framingham.
Medford fireman Wesley Kernan was overcome by smoke while fighting a basement fire at a confectionery on Main street near Sayso road. The blaze started from matches thrown through an open window in P Catalano's shop. Kernan was found unconscious, revived after about thirty minutes.
Cleveland Ohio July 26 Joe Wood will sign a Boston contract tomorrow morning after a conference with President Lannin. He will work out with the team a few days to gain control and be pitched in one of six games in Detroit. If healthy Wood could help cinch another championship and draw his former $7500 salary.

Miss Mary Adelaide Stocken aged 75 died at her East Saugus home from a fright a week after she saw a rattlesnake crossing her lawn. The widow, who lived in an antique house once occupied by General Washington, collapsed after a hearty breakfast yesterday following the shock.
Baltimore report notes at 1 a.m. no signs the submarine Deutschland is preparing to depart her slip.
German consul Carl A. Leuderitz in Baltimore said the merchant submarine Deutschland would not leave for a week and offered no explanation. The vessel, cleared by Captain Paul Koenig for Bremen or any German port, may depart Chesapeake Bay at any time with secrecy surrounding the plans.

Mrs. Adolph Geoffrion 30, wife of a farmer at the foot of Mount Greylock, lies in critical condition after being dragged across a field by a runaway horse while driving a hayrake yesterday. The incident occurred near Mt Greylock.
Mrs Geof frion, mother of four, was injured when a hay rake shaft snagged her horse’s bridle. The horse bolted, she was dragged and struck by tines, puncturing a lung and piercing the neck. She is expected to recover due to great vitality, though bruises and clothing were torn.
Heat waves sent residents reeling as humidity near ninety percent. Philip Max of 11 Rexhane Street, 59, collapsed at home and was taken to City Hospital. Anna McGrath, 22, of 104 Albion Street Somerville, fainted at Sullivan Square terminal and was rushed to Relief Hospital with improving condition by night. Additional prostrations occurred citywide, especially in the North South and West Ends as physicians treated milder cases.
The East Boston Company secured a settlement of 579,734.11 dollars from the Commonwealth for the taking of flats and lands in East Boston. The Executive Council yesterday approved the accord.
