London reports a British protest through Charles Hardinge over Russian actions against British shipping. Britain calls the sinking of the Knight Commander a violation of international law and urges a or possible forceful response to protect shipping, with U S involvement in cargo inquiries.
In New York the Democratic Club welcomed members of the Democratic National Committee signaling the start of local campaigning. Notable absences included top Tammany leaders. The event featured buttons with Judge Parker’s portrait as Chairman Taggart praised the committee. In Lowell an unknown canoeist, about 30, was struck by lightning and drowned on the Concord River near North Billerica during a thunderstorm. The body was recovered and authorities think he was camping at West Bedford.
Agnes McDonough of 165 South Street South End and another woman assaulted Patrolman Hanrahan of Division 4 near Beach Street and Harrison Avenue. A mob of about a hundred onlookers jeered as the struggle lasted several minutes before McDonough was taken to the patrol box and jailed on drunkenness charges.
July 26 report states a sympathetic strike will complete by morning as 700 Chicago packing industry drivers join the general strike. Union leaders say all teamsters in Kansas City St Louis and Boston will quit, threatening riots with nonunion replacements. Union live stock handlers plan to return in numbers to manage stock bought by independents.

Miss Anna Dowling 30, a summer visitor from Roxbury, was killed when her escort Fred Cain’s horse stamped aside a puffing auto on Beacon street. Dowling grabbed the reins, the buggy tipped, she struck the sidewalk fracturing her skull and died before arriving at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dowling was sister of Dr. John J. Dowling of Roxbury.
Sir Claude McDonald, British minister to Japan, has ordered a thorough inquiry into the sinking of the Knight Commander by the Russian Vladivostok squadron. He will hear crew testimony and inspect officers of the Tsinan, which delivered them to port.
Patrick Reardon, 20, of 161 Franklin Street Cambridge, fled on a break in and entering case but was spotted by Patrolman Hackett of Division 2 while both swam at Magazine Beach. Hackett pursued, captured Reardon after a five minute aquatic chase, and escorted him to the bathhouse before calling for a patrol wagon.
Lillian Roberts aged 17 of 66 Flint street Somerville and Lillian Burke aged 15 of 48 Joy street Somerville have been missing from their homes since last Wednesday. Relatives are alarmed and two motormen away from work for the same period are noted, with friends hoping locating them will shed light on the girls' whereabouts.

James H. Johnston a 36 year old Edison Electric foreman fell from the Marine Park Castle Island bridge while attempting to locate wires yesterday afternoon. In full view of picnickers his body struck rocks then the water where it was recovered. Johnston a widower with three young children resided at the Hotel Lafayette and was attended by Undertaker Sulivan and Medical Examiner Draper.
In Fall River on July 26 the strike fund kicked off with a $5000 pledge toward a $50,000 fund among local business leaders. Joseph T. Clinton offered to contract a baker to deliver 1000 loaves to strikers and to install a sealed Textile Council donation box at Tiverton. More offers of help followed.
A collision between a crowded Revere Beach car and a derailed outward bound car on Ocean avenue near Beach street Revere last night hurled Mrs. Clara Levin of 5 James street Cambridge from her seat with injuries that may be fatal. About a dozen other passengers were severely shaken but none required medical aid.
Rear Admiral H. C. Taylor of the United States Navy, commander of the Indiana at Santiago, died in Copper Cliff General Hospital from peritonitis during a visit to his son Roger Taylor, superintendent of smelters at Canadian Copper Company's works. He arrived July 16, was ill at the Balmoral Hotel, transferred by special train, and died before a Montreal specialist could arrive.
Patrolman F S Howell of Savin Hill life saving crew rescued Joseph Rotter of Worcester from drowning yesterday afternoon off the Columbia Yacht Club pier in South Boston.
A large number of strikers plan to insure against hardship and begin farming. French Canadians intend to return home and work farming for income. Strikers dig clams and blueberries and nearby woods yield berries while others dredge dams on the Taunton River. The State Board of Conciliation has left the city and settlement prospects look dim. Mills are idle with a 12 percent wage cut affecting 30,000 workers. Local unions vote to fund relief with amateur boxing events and small salary concessions amid the dispute.
In Fall River on July 26 Judge John J. McDonough sentenced Narcisse Martin a 16 year old operative to 30 days at the New Bedford House of Correction for smashing windows at Ancona Mills after failing to pay a $15 fine. The judge stated law and order must prevail and warned that the public seeks the community’s stance and that the court will make it clear. For other strike news see page eight.
