Barber Shop Stranger Falls Ill With Fever and Chills

A colored seaman from New Brunswick named Abner Dubois went to a South End barber shop for a shave. He fainted after being attended to and slept in a chair. A reader of medical journals warned others he had smallpox causing a hurried exit and police call. He was taken to City Hospital with chills and fever. The shop was not fumigated.

Crowds Gather for Jeffries Fitzsimmons Bout in San Francisco

San Francisco crowds filled Valencia street and the ring area as police cleared grounds before gates opened. The octagonal arena held 5000 in bleachers under arc lights at 7 45 pm with 240 officers maintaining order. Fitzsimmons told the AP he was ready for a match as preparations continued.
