Son of Noted Yachtsman Wins Patent for Automatic Gun

William Burgess, Harvard student and son of yacht designer Edward Burgess, secured a U S government patent for an automatic machine gun. His design, praised by Army and Navy officers, features five working parts, a spiral return spring, and dual extractors to prevent gas escape and jams. Burgess enlisted in the navy during the Spanish American War and later moved to develop the device at Sandy Hook.

Women Sent to Jail After Municipal Court Convictions

Several women were convicted in Municipal Court yesterday for disorderly house offenses on Corning Street. Lizzie Hall received 50 dollar fine and three months at Deer Island. Lillie Wood was jailed six months at Deer Island for entertaining strangers. Mary Harrington faced trial on the same charge with bail set at 500 dollars. Mary Sullivan received six months for walking the streets at night.

125 Babies Sail on Boston Floating Hospital Event

Mrs. George H. Pendergast of Charlestown funded a President McKinley day voyage for 125 babies aboard the Boston Floating Hospital. Eight guests accompanied the infants, all friends of the donor, whose charity work includes serving as regent of the Bunker Hill Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution.

Young Burgess Profiles War Gunnery Talent at Harvard

The 1901 class member at Harvard, Burgess, created a pocket gun weighing twelve pounds with a breakable breech for emergency disablement. A Milton Academy alum born December 25, 1878, he served as gunner's mate on the auxiliary cruiser Prairie during the Spanish American War, aiding blockades and the engagement off Mariel.

Funeral of Captain William H. Russ at Cambridgeport home

Funeral services for Captain William H. Russ were held yesterday at the family home 9 Union street Cambridgeport. Delegations from the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company Lancers' Veteran Association Amicable Lodge F and A M Royal Arcanum and militia friends attended. Burial was at Mt. Auburn Cemetery with Rev. Henry Hinckey conducting the services.

Soda Water Tank Burst Injures Local Worker

Abraham Smadaginsky, 26, of 27 North Margin street, was treated at City Hospital for a broken leg after a soda water tank burst at the JL Isenberg store at 19 and 20 Stillman street. He was filling the tank at work when the accident happened, with excessive pressure suspected.

Irishman Sets Sail With Vast Dominion Cargo

The steamship Irishman bound for Liverpool carried 10 000 tons dead weight and 15 000 tons measurement. Its cargo included flour grain steel billets steel rails provisions lumber cotton hay cattle and miscellaneous freight that would require fourteen trains of fifty cars each if moved by rail.

Historic Arlington Church Burns in Fierce Fire

Painters discovering embers in the Arlington Baptist Church on Massachusetts Avenue found the building on fire about 9:30. By 11 the church was wrecked. The church, organized 1781 with 27 members, has a history of early Baptist settlement and successive meeting houses culminating in major 1892 improvements.

Passenger Liners Ride Out Fog and Delay at Boston Harbor

The Cunard steamer Ivernia, sailing from Queenstown, is expected in Boston after a seven day and twelve hour westward voyage with 28 saloon, 8 second cabin and 324 steerage passengers. Steamer Altonia and two schooners Modoc and Addie Fuller also ported in rough seas following a dense Cape Cod fog that damaged fore rigging and gear. Captain Watt may replace McKay on Etruria.
