In Cavais Me on July 25 Conley won the race with Teemer second and Gaudaur third as Hamm and Lee chased. Prizes paid $60, $40, and $25 with Conley later bound for Portland. The regatta was a financial failure to the promoters.
New York July 25 A strikingly attractive woman living at No 17 Clinton Place with broker Lee who posed as her husband showed signs of insanity. After a walk she refused to return, left to sleep elsewhere, then returned to a boarding house and set fire to costly dresses. Doors and windows were sealed. the blaze was contained by a boarder and two policemen. She was placed in a straight jacket and sent to an asylum. 43 boarders faced potential danger from the rapid fire.
A suspected cholera case involving a child from the steamer Annie R. Silver to St Louis died at Port Anderson Mississippi. Surg Gen Hamilton ordered quarantine measures and immediate passenger list checks for vessels from France to New Orleans. He cautioned the reporting steps while noting the illness may not be cholera.
Portsmouth NH July 25 Preparations are under way for a reception to the Greely relief expedition on either August 4 or 6 Secretary Chandler will coordinate with the fleet and city efforts Gov. Flue will be consulted regarding sending state militia The Tallapoosa arrived at the navy yard and fired a salute with steam yachts and boats filling the river The Russian minister plenipotentiary accompanied Chandler and was saluted as well
Denver reports a visit by Red Jacket and 40 armed warriors. A city marshal arrested a man for disturbance and carrying firearms. Indians chased by cattlemen, two miles of running fight, about 20 shots fired with no serious injuries. Citizens demand troops to protect the town and prevent further raids by Utes.
The YMCA Bible conference will be held next Tuesday through Friday at the association camp Crescent Beach. Speakers include Rev George F Pentecost DPD of Brooklyn Rev H M Parsons of Toronto Rev H M Moore of Boston and S M Sayford of Newton. Julius Holwegg, a German resident of 154 Norfolk Street, devised a suicide scheme using a fixed looking glass, a gun trigger string, and two revolvers aimed at his head. He sat in a rocking chair and connected all triggers, but only the revolvers discharged, leaving him dead in the chair.

New Haven July 25 John H Bald win a carpenter at N Baldwin's straw hat factory Milford had his leg ripped from his body when his clothing was caught in a slowly turning shaft. Dr Frank H Whittemore amputated the stump and Baldwins chances of recovery or death are about equal.
At a St John New Brunswick creditors meeting the firm Wm. M. Parks & Sons mills reported liabilities of 342000 and assets of 486000. Creditors voted to form a joint stock company under the Parks management with 200000 capital and to take stock for their claims.
In Cincinnati on July 25 proprietors of local foundries and cigar factories presented a petition to the mayor asking police protection for their nonunion employees. They allege daily assaults and beatings and warn they may move factories to other cities if protection is denied.
A man about 30, 5 feet 8, wearing a dark suit and straw hat, visited several Lawrence shops today. At the store of 0 R Dearborn, 188 Essex Street, he attempted to buy items and robbed the money drawer of 117 dollars. He remains at large. An unrelated local insert promotes G. O. Taylor Old Bourbon.
