Iron trade reports show record consumption in disaster year

The 1877 iron and steel trade suffered its most disastrous year since the financial downturn, yet consumption rose. Imports valued at 9,195,368 dollars, down from 10,584,126 in 1876 and 61,724,227 in 1872, with zero iron rails and 35 tons of steel rails. Exports totaled 16,659,675 dollars, versus 311,794,743 in 1876 and 310,030,125 in 1872, excluding Canada shipments of about 23,000,000 annually since 1874. If the trade is hurting under protection, Mr Kelley should act.
