Striking coal miners clash with troops in Dern and Nord

Paris dispatch reports Der din miners attacked a troop detachment, troops fired, one miner killed, several wounded, forty attackers arrested. Rioting continued at Auzin with troops using muskets, one more striker killed. Reinforcements arrive from Paris as Thiers urged officials to maintain order. Disturbances also tied to International Belgium.

Bloody encounter stirs New York politics and a bail plea

An account of the Brooklyn stabbing of Henry Corr, the Commissioner of Charities, by Dominick H. Roche during a wine fueled dispute on a steamer. Corr survives but bleeds from a groin wound. A Matamoros dispatch says Rocha may have been defeated at Selmas near Monterey. Martinez is said to have occupied San Luis Potosi without resistance. Guadalajara citizens oppose Gov Corona who was ousted. Siege ended at Matamoros as National Guards were disbanded. Four Americans robbed near Monterey. San Francisco report says Tepic uprising unfounded and Mazatlan executions were rebels. Rail line work to start after U.S. approval.

Indian treaty efforts fail at Fort Francis amid tribal resistance

Fort Gerry advices report Indian Commissioner Simpson failed to broker a treaty after thirteen days with about 2500 Indians who rejected any proposition. They threaten to halt mining in Shebandawin county if military aid is not provided, signaling potential serious trouble. Engagement with Fannte expedition ends in deaths and executions

Havana July 24 Gen Rigneline telegraphs a report of an engagement with nineteen remaining members of the Fanne expedition in which ten filibusters were killed and four captured, executed. Five escaped likely to die of hunger. Importations of Chinamen continue with two vessels arriving last week. Capt Allan has captured Augustin Aguero, revolutionary Postmaster General, Gen Zabalza returns to Spain on the 30th.

Brakeman Robert Barnes Fatally Injured On Hartford Line

Robert Barnes of Wallingford, a night freight brakeman on the Hartford and New Haven road, was struck by a bridge while atop a freight car and fatally injured. He was brought to the hospital in the city, leaving a wife in Wallingford.
