The city markets opened muted and trended down throughout the session, finishing with heavy to weak prices at the day’s lows. No notable developments reported in ongoing investigations or financial actions.
A special Corinthian Yacht Club race at Marblehead drew a strong field led by Sayonara and Owenee with Beatrix finishing ahead after Captain Crocker executed a clever line crossing. The Owenee trailed closely, Sayonara second under Herreshoff timing, while Beatrix built a decisive early margin in breezy seas and clear air.
Severe floods in Moravia and Silesia have devastated farms and crops, destroyed bridges and roads, and swamped a railroad embankment. A section collapsed beneath a crowded train, overturning it and seriously injuring the workers aboard.
Myron Lilley 14 died while bathing with a companion in the Nashua River. He got beyond his depth and drowned. Searchers are seeking the body. Lilley was an active member of the local Young Men's Christian Association.

Portsville Penn July 23 The six East Norwegian township school directors Edward N Sterner John Tobin Michael Bb Bormer Thomas Cullen Patrick Dowling and Michael Battersby were arrested on charges of stealing district funds. They allegedly issued fraudulent orders for 400 to 500 dollars and diverted cash, levied on teachers and collected portions of salaries, including a payment to keep Lizzie Higgins in her post. Bail set at 300 dollars each for court appearance.
In Albany on July 23 Superintendent James F. Pierce announced Judge Michael Coleman of New York City will examine appraise and report the value of real estate that may be mortgaged to or owned by the New York Life Insurance Company as part of ongoing examinations by the state insurance department.
The Maine Pharmaceutical Association met at Portland Club House with officers elected including President C. K. Partridge and Vice President Ara Warner. Destructive hail storm 25 miles north of Aberdeen North Dakota on Tuesday tore through a 100 mile track from Hosmer to east of Frederick. Hail up to 14 inches circumference fell near Westport. Some farms lost 50 to 100 acres of crops while others remained good. A separate report from Austin Minnesota notes a mile wide hay and wind storm in Waltham township causing thousands in damage.
Deputy Sheriff Corning reports a suspect resembling Hanover murderer Frank Co. Almy escaped on the Mongolian cattle steamer after Montreal chase. Canadian authorities did not search the steamer at Quebec or Rimouski. Brigham will seek examination of its passengers on arrival in Liverpool. Detective Hascom’s Boston agency presence confirms renewed, relentless pursuit for justice.
In Monongahela City Pennsylvania on July 23 Harry Boyd and John Myford rivals from Black Diamond quarrel over a girl and fight under prize ring rules. After three rounds Boyd strikes Myford on the neck near the jugular. Myford collapses and dies an hour later. Boyd surrenders to authorities.

New York July 23 The Evening Post publishes a Washington despatch on General Morgan defending Indian education policy against Catholic Bureau criticism. Letters from educators and public figures praise his stand while alleging the bureau acts as a lobby and wastes funds. Bishop Kain denounces Morgan as anti Catholic.
A Valparaiso dispatch says the Esmeralda fired on the French corvette Volta near Coquimbo Bay and the French admiral may demand an apology. The torpedo cruiser Lynch narrowly escaped capture after a dynamite plot to destroy her and the Condell in port. Balmaceda’s forces plan a coastal stand as the Chilean fleet tests French and Italian recruits while Lisbon and London report French and Portuguese tensions involving Chilean vessels.
Charles J. Perkins of New York filed a bill in the Circuit Court seeking an injunction against Edison General Electric Company. He claims to be the inventor of an improvement in circuit breakers for electric lamps, assigned to the United States Electric Lighting Company, and alleges Edison is using it without authority.

Liston July 23 The past six months saw a 4 million pound withdrawal of gold from Portugal and a continuing drain. From August the outflow should ease as principal payments including American wheat are met and importers cut sterling commissions. Finance Minister Carvalho plans a silver coin basis of one thousand reis, financing 7200 centos of reis, to stabilize the system and seek trade pacts with South American states to make Lisbon a European depot. The treasury shows improvement under alcohol monopoly but a 3 million pound current-year deficit remains.
Paris reports two killings with similar traits to London Jack the Ripper crimes. An Italian named man and a woman were involved in each case, the woman strangled and mutilated after rooming with the man. A police letter claimed the crimes mark the start of a series.
Colonel Howard Vincent founder and secretary of the United Empire Trade League has arrived in Ottawa to advocate the movement. He says colonies should act first, with Canada as the initial focus of outreach.
