Hoy Loy the only Chinese US government inspector in the city hunted the Boston end of a major smuggling syndicate after registering at the Savoy. He aims to trace newcomers, secure expulsions, and identify the traffickers while noting sources of profit may include non Chinese members.
AP correspondent reports examination of ship hull hits from the battle shows the Brooklyn fired the most decisive large shells. The Infanta Maria Teresa, Vizcaya, Almirante Oquendo, and others received significant 4, 5, and 8 inch hits. Brooklyn tallied the largest share of 8 inch and 5 inch shells among the American ships.
James H. Donnelly chief night clerk at the New Haven post office was arrested on embezzlement charges from letters. In default of 15 bonds he was jailed awaiting a hearing August 8 before U S Commissioner Wright. Postal Inspector Bulman led the arrest using a test letter and a marked bill. Two marked coins were found on his person. The thefts are said to have continued for two years.

The twenty sixth annual National Association of Amateur Oarsmen regatta began on the Schuylkill River with ideal weather and smooth water. Toronto Worcester and Philadelphia crews claimed prizes in six races led by exciting finishes in the pair oared and four oared events. Exley and Scott of the Pennsylvania Barge Club upset Wright and Thompson of Toronto in the top shells.
In Santiago de Cuba a reported clash north of the city saw 4000 Cubans under General Garcia routed by a Spanish detachment heading to Santiago. Cuban casualties were claimed at 41 slain with many wounded. Spanish losses were smaller. General Toral had surrendered to the American army, not to the Cubans, and Garcia ordered a renewed assault before retreat ensued.
Louis Whitworth Robson an 18 year old Yale University student died at Grace Hospital New Haven of typhoid fever. He was son of Dr. John R. Robson of Pittsburgh and played as substitute third baseman on the varsity team last fall. The remains will be taken to Pittsburgh for interment.
