The Board of Health investigates a North Square death moved to Gallups Island infection hospital. Dr Durgin reports autopsy underway to identify the disease. Authorities doubt Asiatic cholera but note its prevalence in Italian areas and arrival with immigrants in New York.
Last Wednesday a North End physician treated Mrs. Tommassina Mastrodomenico and feared cholera. She and her daughter Mary were moved to Gallup's Island, where the mother died and autopsies continued as officials guarded 25 families and 50 children in the Angelo building. Two sailors from Italy, boarding the Mastrodomenico house, are named Vincenzo brothers and left after the stricken woman.
Business and pleasure use the Beta express and accommodation service to travel by trolley between Boston and Worcester with intermediate stops for convenient transit.
Paris July 20 Lydia Lipkowska and George Baklanoff have ended their romance after two years. Lipkowska, at Covent Garden, was expected to wed Baklanoff, who says he now commits to his art. Reported tensions rose after Baklanoff showed interest in Ida Rubinstein, fueling widely watched speculation. Both remain in Paris as this triangular romance unfolds.

The Medford Board of Aldermen voted unanimously to investigate the fire department following a July 16 home fire at Alderman Henry Center’s residence 315 Riverside Street. The blaze caused an estimated $5000 loss and prompted calls for a special departmental probe.
John W. Gates whose illness raised fears of a fatal outcome has shown steady improvement over several days in Paris. He rested well today and physicians expect continued slow recovery.
Governor Foss said his call for an investigation into United Shoe Machinery Company was not politically motivated or aimed at reprisals against Sidney W. Winslow and James J. Storrow, who have clashed with him in business.
The Governor was charged on the House floor with conspiring with lobbyist Ben Gibby to “open up” on a large corporation. Gibby had earlier sued for payment for legislative work for the same company, while Representative Norman White alleged the Governor used politics to strike at business opponents. The confrontation was one of the fiercest in-house attacks on a Governor.
Milton K. Willis of Boston, an employee of the Californian Mexican Land and Cattle Company, was killed in a three cornered pistol duel. Epifano Gallego, brother of the Mexicali sub prefect, and a companion were involved. Gallego was wounded and his companion fatally so. Rebels reportedly seized cattle during the recent revolution, including cattle belonging to Gallego.

Four masked men held up a boy clerk at Rebecca Levy’s candy shop on 75 F street South Boston early last night and rifled the cash drawer. About 500 people were in the streets and witnesses saw them flee but could not identify the robbers after removing their goggles.
A 15 year old nephew of the proprietor was left alone in a store when four men wearing automobile goggles entered. They grabbed the youth, forced him to the corner, and emptied the cash drawer before fleeing down F street toward West Fifth. The boy could not identify the suspects. Police were notified.
President Taft and Mrs Taft will spend at least a week aboard the Mayflower and visit Bar Harbor during a Maine coast vacation. The couple already spent ten days on the yacht last year touring summer resorts along the coast.
The Boston school committee granted elementary teachers a $48 annual increase or $4 per month at a special meeting. The raise will take effect with the new school year starting Sept 1, 1911. Mayor Fitzgerald authorized remission of $67,000 to the water department to fund the increase.
The city allocates 17 000 for water savings in schools 10 000 for repairs and alterations and 40 000 to raise salaries for teachers earning under 1000. A 10 cent increase in the 1912 budget and further raises in 1913 and 1914 are planned with details to be set February 1 1912. The school committee approved the measure after an executive session with no debate.

Louis Strang a leading auto racer died when attempting to pass a farmer’s wagon during the Wisconsin Automobile Association reliability run near Blue River. Companions escaped after leaping. Strang had domestic troubles and recent divorce suit. He earlier won the 1908 Lowell race and Savannah and Brighton Beach events.
Louis Strang, 26, died when his Case Company car swerved to avoid a passing team and plunged down a five foot embankment during the Wisconsin Automobile Association reliability run from La Crosse to Lancaster. Once a noted speed record setter and ballooning enthusiast, Strang had been suspended earlier for missing a New Orleans meet but reinstated after claiming car trouble.
