Destructive gale capsizes captain and dismasts Puritan
A fierce New England storm swept through Boston harbor as the schooner Puritan was dismasted and abandoned with its crew rescued by a fisherman. Captain Harrington of the S. E. Davis drowned after being swept overboard. The New Brunswick and other steamers delayed in Lincoln's Wharf as vessels braced with extra hawsers. Weather Bureau reported a 36 mile per hour gust at 4 AM and about an inch of rain. The storm moved in from the lower lake region overnight, easing by morning.
