Pittsfield July 19. The McCloud murder case opens with John ONeil Jr. in court as jurors are chosen. The prosecution seeks the death penalty amid intense public interest. Witnesses and evidence, including a missing $10 bill, loom large as the trial begins.
Philip Assner drove his team past a wooded stretch near Jamaica Plain after three men attempted a wagon hold up. He lashed the horses and fled toward Station 13, with two unidentified suspects captured and later released after unable to identify the assailants.

Kerkau scored 300 points while McLoughlin logged 817-28. Average scores listed as Kerkau 520-28 and McLoughlin 817-28.
Harry Lord of Somerville was arrested on Broadway after noon by Patrolman Carter on a bicycle theft charge. He allegedly stole cycles from Miss Helen Gillee of Highland Avenue. Police had sought Lord for some time after the thefts. He was brought to Somerville for processing.

The Alki sails from Seattle carrying 200 gold hopefuls bound for Alaska with dawn departure crowds and packed livestock aboard. A coast of dreamers from college to farm life join adventurers aiming for fortune as reports of early Portland gold inflame the rush.
