Mud in Maine Now Problem with Wreck
Havana, July 18. Water around the Maine wreck nearly removed as the coffer dam level drops a foot. Soundings show depths not exceeding four feet. Mud surrounding the hull now presents the main obstacle, extending from 37 feet to an uncertain depth. Bow structure exposed to frame 18 reveals a greatly elevated double bottom, suggesting a massive exterior explosion. Engineers refrain from decisive conclusions at this stage.
