William G Montarth and Mabel Montarth a church choir leader and organist were arrested in Paterson New Jersey on bigamy and non support charges. The alleged wife Mrs Williams from England and her four daughters claim Montarth as her husband Williams. Mrs Fox and her husband in dispute, both sides deny motive while Montarth's wife alleges infidelity. The couple remain jailed as Mrs Williams and daughters occupy the Montarth home amid public outcry.
Winona special reports Paul Held a Swiss emigrant found dead by suicide after crop failure and homesickness. In the same house his wife and two children lay dead in the next room, three more children dead upstairs, and two eldest boys mortally wounded in the hayloft. A revolver lay at the scene. one boy may survive.
At Greenleaf near Fort Gibson in the Cherokee nation a Saturday barbecue for nominating candidates for next month’s election ended in mass violence. Two full blooded Indians, Bill Lovett and Deer Track, attacked guests after drinking, killing or mortally wounding seven men. The killers remain at large and no arrests are being made.
Las Vegas New Mexico reports Pat Garrett Lincoln county sheriff killed the outlaw known as Billy the Kid in a Fort Sumner cabin after a months long pursuit. The killer is identified as Henry McCarthy a native of New York City.
Peoria Illinois July 18 Twenty eight switchmen in the Union yard struck against an unpopular yard master who brought men from St Louis to take their places. This evening a clash occurred between strikers and five St Louis men during which Nicholas Norwell a Wabash brakeman was fatally shot. Jas Clary a switch engineer was shot in the leg. Ed Champaign and C W Monihan were arrested. Great excitement prevails.
New Orleans July 18 The grand jury has indicted Dr Emanuel Dryfus deputy coroner for larceny of 150 10 gold belonging to Mrs Noonan who died suddenly and in whose case Dryfus was called. He took charge of the effects including the money and concealed it and failed to account for it.
Sheriff Timberlake of Clay County and a posse return from the search for the Rock Island train robbers empty handed. A close watch on Mrs Samuels residence near Kearny, the mother of the James brothers, yielded no clue or lead.
Gideon Ross of Bernardston was struck and killed by a freight train on the Connecticut River road near Greenfield this afternoon while walking on the track. He ignored warning whistles from the engineer. His mother resides in Pennsylvania.
London July 18. Dean Stanley is dead after a semi conscious period at his death bed. The archbishop of Canterbury arrived near the end. Arthur PearHyn Stanley, born 1815, is noted as a leading Broad Church figure and prolific religious writer. Other items report price cuts to Chicago tickets, a Jersey City building collapse killing two children, bandit Esposito case adjournment, a Harlem assault on Louise Umber, Mayor Grace approving a street safety ordinance, and a certiorari action favoring Pacific Mail Steamship Co with other telegraph firms seeking tax writs.
A series of early fires cause extensive damage. In Red Bank New Jersey nine buildings burned including the Red Bank Register and telegraph office. Assistant Foreman W M Conroy died aiding fire suppression. In Brooklyn New York Bush and Denslow oil factory and Rogers yard suffered heavy losses. East Oakland California Washington hall burned. Wallace Michigan sawmill town wiped out. Danvers Massachusetts lumber storehouse fire caused near total loss.

A party of Massachusetts railroad commissioners led by FE W. Kinsley and Clemens Herschelt with Judge Thomas Russell and President Choate visited Newport aboard a special train. Cambridgeport, July 18. Eldridge G. Lapham, son of the late Judge John Lapham, born October 18, 1814 in Farmington N Y. He grew up on a farm, attended Canandaigua academy with Stephen A Douglas, studied law and was admitted in 1841. He lived in Canandaigua since 1844, was a Democrat until 1848 but backed the Wilmot proviso and Van Buren ticket, and served in Congress for the twenty seventh district elected in 1874 and then again in the forty fifth through forty seventh congresses. He is neither very bad nor very great, but a fairly strong partisan.
Washington reports issued by the department of agriculture on July 1 show a 2 percent rise in potato area nationwide since 1880, with New York, Michigan up 5 percent, Missouri 6 percent, and Ohio down 2 percent. Potato condition is high though insect damage noted. Tobacco acreage exceeds last year, especially in Maryland Virginia and Kentucky, but remains near 1879 levels due to plant scarcity. crop condition higher than last year at this time.
In Mille Lac near Atkin, two outlaws killed a chief and four Indians. Arrests made, Agent Tibbett seeks instructions. Governor orders custody in St Paul or Minneapolis and calls for state aid if needed. Williams brothers, Wisconsin outlaws, are encamped in a cave near Durand with 800 armed men surrounding them.
