City alive with jitneys as thousands walk while Union Officials and Elevated Trustees hold long conferences. They debate a proposed compromise that would require a vote by the union meeting and consider sending the case to an outside arbitrator, yet no decision is reached and no plan to end the strike is approved.
President Wilson described how Versailles conference agreements shaped the peace treaty to three Republican senators at the White House. He planned to brief more Republican members later. In sports, National League games saw Cincinnati defeat Brooklyn 5 to 1 and New York beat Chicago 2 to 1. American League results included Cleveland 4 Boston 0 and Washington 9 Philadelphia 3 with long games remaining unsettled.
Trustees of the Boston Elevated railway and the carmen's union pressed talks to end the strike. At the Governor's suggestion an arbitration board was proposed with Vahey Barum and a third member chosen by the Governor or agreed by the union. No decision by midnight and another meeting set for nine tomorrow morning.
Henry Ford faced another long session in his $1,000,000 libel suit against the Chicago Daily Tribune at Mount Clemens on July 17. The fourth day mirrored prior questioning with repeated terms such as preparedness and militarism, as Ford appeared distracted and confused, with his own lawyer urging him to stay on track.
Paris July 17 The interallied council refused Italy's request that Austrian concessions at Tien Tsin China be transferred to Italy.
Norwich Conn July 17 no cars ran on the Shoreline electric railway system today and strike conditions remained unchanged from yesterday with no services operating.
Washington July 17 War Labor Board announced no decision would be rendered in the ongoing strike case. Details continued on page seven.
