A head on crash at the School and Common streets junction in Belmont involved eight occupants in two heavy autos. A woman and an eight year old girl were severely injured. The severely injured rode with H. J. Murray of Arthur street West Roxbury and family.
In the other car were S P Tierney of 34 Puritan Road Swampscott Mrs Tierney their seven year old son and a man whose name was not given None of the occupants of this car was severely injured as it was the heavier car and was travelling at a higher rate of speed All however were badly bruised and some of them were cut by flying glass.
Salem report says Charles O. Upton, 25, a drug clerk living at 2 St Peters Street, drank corrosive sublimate after taunts at his arrest and conviction for heroin tablet sales. He had been in ill health and felt the crowd's rushing as he returned home tonight.
Lawrence Stafford aged 17 of Roxbury died when his parachute failed during an exhibition at Nut Island Houghs Neck. A crowd of over a thousand witnessed the accident as Stafford plummeted into two feet of water. Mrs Eugene L Stafford fainted, and the event was noted near the Stafford business in Boston.
Louis Libby and William Shapiro, owners of the car that carried Herman Rosenthal's killers to the Metropole, told their lawyer they will aid the district attorney in proving police involvement. They accuse police of orchestrating the assassination and said they will not cooperate with Dougherty's detectives further.
Mrs. Jeremiah Dingley of Auburn, an approximate 80 year old widow and cousin of the late Congressman Nelson Dingley, married Levi Solomon a Virginian aged a little over 30 in Portland on July 17.
The ceremony was performed by Rev Edward C Downey at his home after a brief shopping trip during which roses for the wedding were purchased. The bride, the second wife of Mr Dingley a shoe manufacturer and banker who died about 15 years ago, is understood to receive an income of 15000 dollars yearly and is described as handsome and well preserved for her age.
On July 17 New Bedford enters the third day of textile labor unrest as the A F L and I W W clash for control of local industry. Rioting disrupts activities while each union marshals its supporters to influence the outcome of the dispute.
In American League action Chicago beat Boston 1 0 and Boston won 7 3 Chicago in the two games. Washington lost to St Louis 1 6 and the second game went 10 innings 7 6 for St Louis. Detroit routed Philadelphia 13 1 in the first game and Philadelphia won 5 4 in 11 innings in the second. Cleveland defeated New York 5 1. In the National League New York defeated Pittsburgh 10 0 and Philadelphia beat Chicago 66 to 5. Brooklyn won 7 to 5 and St Louis 1. Niles and Behr starred in Longwood tennis. Esther W now mate to Grand Circuit wins feature at Kala m2ar700. Finland sails from Stockholm with U S Olympic athletes aboard as the boxing board heads toward weight class reform.
Colonel Roosevelt announced from Oyster Bay that he would not undertake his planned Middle West tour. A conference with campaign manager Senator Dixon and aides George W. Perkins and O K. Davis led to the decision. Davis cited pressing questions at New York headquarters that prevented the trip.
Mr. Davis said Roosevelt would stay in Oyster Bay until the last third of August when he would depart for Chicago to attend the new party convention. After the convention he may speak in the Central West. He planned to visit Kansas, Iowa and Michigan to campaign before the primaries where electors are chosen.
Elsa Pinkham of Lewiston a waitress at Youngs Hotel at York Beach narrowly escaped drowning after venturing beyond her depth. Chauffeur Meader from Newburyport and IL Perrault of Boston pulled her ashore as she collapsed from shock and fright.
